WHEN YOU SEEK
fnancial or estate planning advice, you
may not expect suggestions about charitable giving. Most
advisors would agree that this is a very personal topic,
perhaps only to be raised by the client. Others would say
it is a service to simply inquire about helping you articu-
late your lifetime goals and dreams—which might include
the desire to leave a legacy to an organization dear to
your heart.
Tus the discussion began at a gathering of Beaufort-
area fnancial planners, estate attorneys, tax accountants
and insurance agents at Beaufort Memorial in November.
Longtime attorney Julian Levin noted that over the
years, he has found that many clients appreciate being
reminded of opportunities to leave a fnal expression of
support for their favorite charities.
“If the interest and desire are there, you do what you
can to help them fulfll their desire to help, at what-
ever level they desire and are capable of,” Levin says.
“Interestingly, in some cases the client even asks me
which charities they should beneft. Of course, the deci-
sion must be theirs.”
A good choice
Te board of the BMH Foundation agrees that Beaufort
Memorial is a solid candidate for gifts and bequests that
can make a diference. Our not-for-proft hospital has an
ongoing commitment to accessible and excellent health-
care. Add to this the decades of growing philanthropic
support that has helped BMH purchase state-of-the-art
equipment (such as digital mammography), bring needed
services to Beaufort (such as radiation oncology) and
build a perpetual endowment for future support, and you
have something that many in our community recognize
as very special and worthy of support.
“Te Foundation is totally committed to helping pre-
serve and grow the dependable healthcare services we
have come to expect from Beaufort Memorial—and all of
us in the community need these services at some point,”
says BMH Foundation Chair Bill Nettles. “We look for ev-
ery way we can to get the word out that the Foundation is
here as the conduit for community support for BMH. We
want everyone to understand what a precious resource
we have in our hospital.” Nettles notes that reaching out
through groups such as the professional advisors is a use-
ful way to keep spreading the word.
In addition to providing updates and tours of BMH
facilities, the BMH Foundation also ofers local advisors
