COMING SOON
to a neighborhood
near you: Beaufort Memorial’s LifeFit
Wellness Services mobile unit, recently
spruced up and ready to roll.
As part of LifeFit’s Community Health
Improvement Program (CHIP), the mobile
wellness unit, sometimes referred to as
CHIP, will be cruising Beaufort and Jasper
counties this winter, ofering area resi-
dents free or low-cost health screenings.
“People love the convenience—and the
price,” says Susanne Baisch, CHIP’s family
nurse practitioner. “With so many people
underinsured or uninsured these days,
there’s an incredible need for this kind of
service.”
On the road since 1999, CHIP was
due for a much-needed makeover. Te
$50,000 renovation, funded by the BMH
Foundation, included new fooring,
countertops, ceiling tiles and wall cover-
ings. To better serve patients, the interior
was reconfgured and new furnishings
purchased, including an exam table for
the private examination room, two chairs
for the blood-draw room and a TV-DVD
player for the waiting area.
Te eye-catching and now familiar
exterior, featuring colorful Gullah images
created by renowned artist Jonathan
Green, was not changed.
As part of its regular schedule, the
50-foot van visits Sun City, the Lady’s
Island Fire Station, Belk’s and the YMCA
in Beaufort, Sam’s Club and S.H.A.R.E.
on Hilton Head Island, Laurel Hill
Apartments in Port Royal, the former
Goody’s store in Blufton, Burton Wells
Community Center and senior centers in
Hardeeville, Coosawhatchie, Callawassie,
Blufton, Ridgeland and St. Helena.
Neighborhoods, school and com-
munity organizations, military and
church groups, and corporations also
can book the unit at no cost for their
events and health fairs. In recent years,
CHIP has made appearances at the Penn
Center Heritage Days Celebration, the
Beaufort Water Festival and the Concours
d’Elegance.
