“Approximately 40 percent of all women and 25 per-
cent of all men have varicose veins,” says vascular surgeon
J. Chadwick Tober, MD, of Beaufort Memorial Surgical
Specialists. “Because the traditional treatment for this
condition—surgical vein stripping and ligation—tends to be
a painful procedure with a lengthy recovery time, patients
who sufer from varicose veins often decide to just sufer with
them.”
During surgical ligation, faulty valves in the varicose vein
are isolated and tied of, causing blood to fow into the healthy
veins adjacent to it. Surgical stripping completely removes the
vein that has extensive valve failure.
While surgical ligation and stripping have been practiced for
many years, minimally invasive techniques have become the pre-
ferred treatment. Such procedures can be performed in a doctor’s
ofce under local anesthesia and require virtually no recovery time.

Dr. Tober recently began ofering the nonsur-
gical VenaCure EVLT procedure, a fast, safe and minimally invasive laser
vein treatment proven to be more than 95 percent efective.
In the VenaCure EVLT treatment, a laser fber is inserted into the vein
through a tiny puncture. As the fber is withdrawn from the vein, laser
energy emitted from the top of the fber causes the treated vein to close,
while the body automatically routes the blood to other healthy veins.
Te patient receives only local anesthetic and experiences little to no
discomfort during the 45-minute procedure. After treatment, a patient can
simply walk out of the ofce and resume normal activities.
