The Duke Symphony Orchestra

returned to Beaufort in March for the eighth year, delighting Beaufortonians with a marvelous performance ben-eftting Beaufort Memorial Hospital’s Keyserling Cancer Center and Healing Arts programs. Key sponsors for the concert were Kinghorn Insurance of Beaufort; Lowcountry Anesthesia, PA; and Wachovia Wells Fargo.

Te 70-piece orchestra, led by conduc-tor Harry Davidson, performed works by Hovhaness, Grainger, MacDowell and Liszt. BHS Voices director Vic Varner conducted the orchestra and 50-member choral ensemble in Stephen Sondheim’s “I Remember” and Claude Henri Vic’s “It Is a Great Day of Joy;” both pieces were orchestrated by Dataw resident and guest

bassoonist Bill Baker.

“Tis event benefts everyone. Concert proceeds have now topped $157,000, helping enhance the patient experience at the Keyserling Cancer Center and the hospital,” says BMH Foundation Executive Director Alice Moss. “Beaufort High cho-ral students get a unique performing op-portunity. Duke students enjoy the trip to Beaufort, and community members enjoy hosting the orchestra students as well as enjoying the concert.”

Te evening ended with an unforget-table conductor’s reception at historic Berners Barnwell Sams House, hosted by Dr. and Mrs. John W. Gray.
