Partnerships key to self-sufciency

Tey may not have known it, but local residents were si-lent partners in an agreement signed in 2002 by Beaufort Memorial and Te Blood Alliance (TBA). Under the agree-ment, TBA—a nonproft community blood bank based in Jacksonville, Fla.—would sup-ply all the blood that BMH patients needed. And the

Beaufort community, both partners believed, could be relied on to donate that blood.

Teir belief was well-founded. Since May 2009, Beaufort Memorial has been self-sufcient. For each of the past 23 months, generous, community-minded local donors have given enough blood to meet or exceed the needs of BMH patients.

But donors can’t rest on their laurels just yet. Blood is a precious, short-lived resource that cannot be manufac-tured and requires constant replenishment.

In November 2009, Te Blood Alliance at Beaufort Memorial Hospital Donor Center opened to increase donation opportunities in our community.

Tis April, the center moved from Ribaut Road to slightly larger quarters at 1001 Boundary St. (the former location of Woodlands Bank). It is called Te Blood Alliance at Beaufort.

Te renovated space provides the same comfort and convenience and friendly, expert staf that donors were used to at the Ribaut Road location.

Its hours of operation are the same, too: Tuesdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Wednesdays and Tursdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A ffth donation day may be ofered later this year.

Appointments to donate blood at Te Blood Alliance at Beaufort can be made by going to www.igiveblood.com or calling 843-522-0409 .

Bringing home the gold

Updated quality measures data shows that BMH has achieved Gold Status with the American Heart Association’s “Get With Te Guidelines” program for the second year in a row!

To achieve Gold Status, a hospital must score at least 80 percent in each quality measure and sustain that score for at least one year.

BMH received the following scores on conges-tive heart failure core measures (aggregate) for January 1 through December 31, 2010: 100 percent compliance rate for giving

complete discharge instructions. 100 percent compliance rate for left ventricular function measurement. 95 percent compliance rate for giving ACE or ARB for low left ventricular function. 100 percent compliance rate for giving beta-blockers at the time of discharge. So, once again, we have achieved Gold Status! For more information, call Betty W. Worrell, RN, AMI/CHF/PNEU, Pneumonia Quality Care Coordinator, at 843-522-5824 .
