From the President
What’s
new
at BMH
Fall is on its way,
and we have a lot to look forward to in the next few months.
Our new emergency department is shaping up nicely and is on schedule to
open in January 2013, as is our new administrative building with an expanded
wellness center on the first floor. Both of these construction projects will
greatly improve service to our community. By consolidating the smaller offices
throughout our campus, we will be able to tear down old buildings and create
much-needed surface parking closer to the hospital.
We recently launched our new website at
www.bmhsc.org
. Our goal is for it
to be more user-friendly and to give you the information you need to make good
decisions about your healthcare. Please let us know if you have ideas about how it
might be more useful to you.
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and October is Breast Cancer
Awareness Month. You’ll learn more about these important topics and related
activities in this issue. We also have submitted an application to the state to allow
us to perform interventional cardiac treatments for emergency patients and hope
to have positive news to report soon. (See page 6 to learn more.)
We continue to make improvements in our orthopedic services, including our
Total Joint Program, thanks to major commitments on the part of our doctors,
nurses, therapists and other staff members who touch those patients. We continue
to grow our services in Bluffton, expanding our breast care services and welcom-
ing our newest family medicine doctor, Roger Ulrich, MD.
As the only not-for-profit hospital between Savannah and Charleston,
Beaufort Memorial Hospital (BMH) continues to feel the impact of the growing
uninsured market. This, along with the county’s decision not to provide any fund-
ing for indigent care this year, makes the need for community support at BMH
even greater. We thank everyone who understands the need to provide additional
funding to our local hospital. Your support gives us the ability to continue our
mission to serve all those who need care, regardless of their means to pay.
